To All Who are Concerned,
On June 28, 2016, there will be a vote in my county, Metcalfe County, Kentucky, to attempt to overturn
ALCOHOL PROHIBITION.  Yes, believe it or not, we still have alcohol prohibition in my neck of the woods.
IMO, this is not only (though probably largely) because of the 'church people', but also because of the
bootleggers.  Yes, we still have a bit of MOONSHINE in these hills <G>.  Irony - I have been working against
prohibition of legal activity (smoking TOBACCO) in PRIVATELY OWNED businesses, and I live in a county
that still has ALCOHOL prohibition.  At least, back in 1913, they did recognize the necessity to change the US
Constitution to so infringe PROPERTY rights, and individual liberties.  This is a letter I am going to submit to
our local newspaper.
Dear Fellow Citizens,
'Prohibition makes a crime out of things that are not crimes.....  A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very
principles upon which our government was founded.'  So wrote Abraham Lincoln, in about 1840.  He was a
very smart, also a God fearing man, and born in Kentucky.
I have personal experience with the devastation use of alcohol can cause for the small percentage (about
5%) of folks whose bodies have the physiological inability to properly metabolize alcohol, so become
addicted.  There are also those who have been driven by hardships and/or tragedies of life into the bottle (or
drugs).  "Been there, done that", too.  I have not had a drink since 1978.  God did that for me, NOT a
government prohibition.  Who knows, if alcohol had not beaten me into submission to God, perhaps my life
would not ever have turned around.  Making people who are so afflicted into CRIMINALS does NOT help
them, or those around them, who are already suffering economic deprivation and abuse wreaked by their
loved one's problem.  There is a huge opportunity for ministry here, not a role for government, except for their
proper role to try to keep our roads safe from them.  Keeping impaired drivers off the highways must continue
to be a very high priority for law enforcement - but all our odds on the road should be improved, if fewer of
those afflicted ones are driving to the next county and back to get supplied.  It would also give law
enforcement more time to patrol the roads for drunk drivers, if they don't have to use their time to arrest
people who are peacefully enjoying a beer on their OWN FRONT PORCH.
Many ask WWJD - what would Jesus do?  Reading the King James Bible for decades, I prefer to ask, WDJD -
what DID Jesus do?  When the Pharisees were going to stone the adulteress (John 8:3-11), Jesus told them,
"He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her."  I guess they were a bit more
honest in those days, as none threw a stone.  "And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee:
go, and sin no more."  What JDND (Jesus DID NOT do) was to call on Caesar (the secular
government) to make a law banning adultery.
God, who is omnipotent, and created everything that is, could have made all humans, like all the animals, to
be governed by instincts.  Then, there would be no sin problem.  Everyone would do right, as they would not
have any ability to make a choice.  But man was created to have fellowship with God, and God did not want
puppet slaves.  He created each of us with a FREE WILL.  Without CHOICE to do good, there can be no such
thing as REAL VIRTUE.  As sad as it is to see some people destroy their own lives and the lives of those
around them, WE are not God.
What else have I found in my KJV about use of alcohol?  There are numerous warnings against
DRUNKENNESS, and also many stories of mischief caused by it - but NO prohibition of use of alcohol.  There
are references to it's use as MEDICINE, and it is listed with other GOOD things God has blessed us with.
There are also dozens of references of wine OFFERINGS to God.  There are WAY too many to cite them all,
here is a VERY short list
Genesis 27:28 "Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of
corn and wine:"
Psalm 104:15 " And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread
which strengtheneth man's heart."
Proverbs 3:10 "So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new
Proverbs 31:6 "Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of
heavy hearts."
Ecclesiastes 9:7  "Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for
God now accepteth thy works."

The very first miracle Jesus did was to turn water into wine - at a WEDDING - at a PARTY.  And, I do not
believe that wine in those days was actually grape juice.  Lacking refrigeration, fermentation was used
to preserve the juice, so it would not spoil. I believe God wants us to ENJOY (not abuse) the good things he
has blessed us with.  The idea that we should not seems ungrateful to me.
The vast majority of people, in fact, can enjoy alcohol in moderation, even though personally, I am not among
them.  Though I no longer have the spiritual sickness, I still have the (probably genetic) inability to properly
metabolize alcohol.  God has so richly blessed me in my life, I have had no desire to drink alcohol for these
many years.  Those who are afflicted with alcohol have a physical and/or a SPIRITUAL problem.  The ONLY
thing government prohibitions do is make their situation even worse, by plundering and persecuting them, and
driving them farther from the love and healing of God.  God works.  Government prohibitions do NOT.
PS:  If you follow the money, you will find that pHARMaceutical interests are behind both tobacco AND
alcohol (AND drug!) prohibitions.  RWJF (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation - they own J&J, and Nicorette
& the patent for Nicoderm) are behind the current anti-tobacco movement, and they were also (same
PEOPLE) behind our 1913 alcohol prohibition!
"This is the world's greatest marketing scheme.  You get the government to ban the competition." (Howard Brandston said about the demise of the incandescent light bulb, but exactly true of Big pHARMaceutical's war on tobacco & alcohol as well)
If you live in Metcalfe County, Kentucky, PLEASE get to the polls on June 28th, and VOTE YES (to END prohibition)
